Amotz Zahavi's paper proposing that mate selection is a selection for a handicap. The companion cites it, with Grafen and with Maynard Smith and Harper, for the principle that signals stay honest when they are costly to fake. Cryptography makes honest identity cheap, through unforgeable signatures, but not honest intent, which is where fraud by agents operates.
