James Lovelock's proposal of a physical basis for life detection experiments. The companion cites it for Earth's atmosphere announcing its biosphere: methane and oxygen coexist far from chemical equilibrium only because the methane is constantly resupplied. It shows that holding matter away from equilibrium costs free energy, so steering stays legible in aggregate under teleological saturation (C2).
