Vaccine-Derived Polioviruses and the Endgame Strategy for Global Polio Eradication

Olen M. Kew, Roland W. Sutter, Esther M. de Gourville, Walter R. Dowdle, Mark A. Pallansch · 2005

Annual Review of Microbiology

A review of vaccine-derived polioviruses and the endgame strategy for global polio eradication. Both papers cite it for strains derived from the oral vaccine that can regain virulence, so eradication requires withdrawing the vaccine itself. The open substrate is the datasphere's analog, and since it cannot be withdrawn, lineages can re-originate, one support of the escape ratchet (C1).
