A review of the impacts of the southern corn leaf blight epidemics of 1970 and 1971. The companion cites it for the male-sterile cytoplasm in most U.S. hybrid corn that let one fungal race destroy about 15% of the 1970 crop. Shared base models create a similar monoculture, and the diversity that would protect lineages from contagion would also protect them from control.
