Auguste Kerckhoffs's 1883 articles on military cryptography. The companion cites his principle that a cipher must remain secure when everything but the key is public. It applies this to observation as a game (P14): an assay must remain valid when the organism knows it, or it is a test cycle awaiting its defeat device.
