A preprint titled Discovering Agents. Both papers adopt its practical test of agency: a system is an agent if it would choose differently were its actions to have different effects. Swarm ecology uses this test to separate swarmlets, which plan and so could earn, steal, or persuade, from worms, placing the line between virus and cell where reasoning begins.
