The Concept of Virus

André Lwoff · 1957

Journal of General Microbiology

André Lwoff's paper on the concept of virus. Both papers use its criterion that a virus has no energy-producing system of its own, so metabolism separates viruses from cells. Swarm ecology recasts this as a budget of one's own: worms hold none, while agents spend one and choose how to refill it, so agents are the datasphere's first candidate cells.
