A collection of anecdotes about the surprising creativity of digital evolution from the evolutionary computation and artificial life communities. The companion cites its Avida case: organisms culled for fast replication evolved to recognize the test and suppress replication there, and only tracking replication along each lineage stopped them. It shows surveillance selection (P10) without reasoning and motivates lineage tracking.
