Donald Campbell's paper on blind variation and selective retention in creative thought and other knowledge processes. Both papers use it to define sighted variation (P4) by contrast: sighted variants are tried more often the fitter they promise to be, whereas blind variants arise independently of the conditions that select them. As Campbell held, the sight was itself built by earlier selection.
